Branding Process Step 2: Kick-off Call

Possibly my favorite part of the branding process are the relationships I get to build with my clients. I love hearing the passion in your voice as you describe the vision behind your business, the growth you envision in the future, and the ways in which you hope to serve your clients well.

A chance to get to know one another

This kick-off call is really just a chance to get to know one another. It’s an opportunity to see if we would be a good fit working together, to determine the design package that best serves your needs, and to walk you through my design process. Over the years, I’ve found it’s always helpful to talk through the process over the phone and answer any potential questions that may arise before your project start date. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible working with me and want to ensure we are on the same page with deliverables and the project timeline. Below I’ve outlined a few things that you can expect us to go over during the first call.

Review + explore answers to the client questionnaire

This will take up the largest chunk of the phone call because it’s the most important as I begin the research and development phase. This research stage is known to my business as the Discovery Phase and is the third step in my process, which I’ll be outlining next Tuesday. Once your client questionnaire is filled out, I’ll have you send a copy back to me so that I can refer to it when I’m researching and brainstorming your brand. But we’ll still go over it in detail to settle any questions you were unsure of, talk through any pain points you are experiencing with your current branding, nail down your ideal client (since this will be the driving force behind all of my design decisions), and discuss any additional considerations. I want to ensure that we are on the same page throughout the collaborative process!

Determine your design package

I do have three pre-set packages on my website: Identity Branding with Collateral, Logo Development, and Design Retainers. These packages have been revised and thoughtfully considered many times and are great choices if you are seeking a new brand identity or simply in need of print or digital collateral. Going over the questionnaire usually reveals what type of services your business is in need of. Maybe it’s a completely new visual identity with a blog post template graphic, social media promotional graphics, business cards, icon design, and an opt-in PDF for your website. Maybe it’s just a few of those items. Whatever it is, I can easily customize directly to your business and brand needs.

Discuss the project timeline and process

Finally, we’ll finish off the call talking through the project timeline, process of working with me, and next steps. I will always keep you updated via email throughout the design process. If we decide on your package and are good to go, then you can expect an email from me in the next 24 hours with the project start date and timeline for your review, along with the quote, contract, and invoice (50% of the final cost is due upfront and 50% once the project is wrapped up). Once your invoice is paid, you’ll officially be booked on my design calendar.

Again, our first consultation call is informal and simply a chance to connect with one other. Next up, we’re talking about the Discovery Phase where I research and create an outline including your project objective, ideal client, target market, competition, creative considerations, tone, and more. This stage is so important to ensure you and I are on the same page and that all of my design choices are catering to your ideal client.
